The Top New Year’s Renovations

Forget resolutions.  If you’re a homeowner who’s thinking about putting your house on the market in 2013, you need to be all about the New Year’s RENOVATIONS! Even though we’ve still got a few weeks to go before the calendar officially changes to 2013, there’s no better time to start planning your New Year’s renovations than right now. No matter what part of the country you live in or what your budget looks like, these 4 renovation projects should be right at the top of your list:

1.  Clean out your closets
Even if you don’t have the money to knock down walls and pay a professional to install built-in shelves and other organizational goodies, a clean closet can go a long way towards making your home look like it’s chock full of space. After all, whether your home appeals to families or single career gals, potential buyers are going to want to make sure that they’re going to have room for all of their stuff. No matter how great the rest of your home is, if your storage space isn’t up to par, most buyers are going to pass. And, as an added benefit, cleaning out your closets gives you a great chance to “lighten your load” before you have to pack everything up and move to your new place!

2.  Fix the cracks in your walls and ceilings
The New Year is the perfect time to get cracking on all kinds of good habits, so why not take that advice a little more literally? Since you’ve been cooped up inside all winter, you’ve probably had plenty of time to notice minor cracks in your walls and ceilings. They’re not threat to your home’s structural integrity, but they’re ugly. And, let’s face it, if you want to get the full asking price on your home, all ugly things must go! Luckily, fixing minor cracks isn’t a major inconvenience. All you need is some latex paintable caulk. You can even smooth it in with your finger! Then, paint it to match the surrounding surface.

3.  Get rid of the creaks
If your creaky front door reminds you of something out of a horror movie, imagine what kind of first impression it’s going to leave with potential buyers! Luckily, this is another easy fix. A little bit of WD-40 will go a long way towards making your doors seen and not heard – just like they should be! All it takes is a quick squirt to put an end to the creaking, so be sure to test every door in your home (including your garage door, the screen doors outside, and even your kitchen and medicine cabinet doors). In a few minutes, you’ll be creak-free!

4.  Check out your hardware
Oftentimes, kitchens and bathrooms don’t need brand new countertops to look fresh and state-of-the-art. Instead, new drawer pulls and handles are all you need! (And, as an added benefit, they’re much, much cheaper than buying and installing new countertops.) So, when you’re polishing off the last of the Christmas cookies, take a look around and ask yourself if your kitchen could benefit from some new hardware. Luckily, you don’t have to hire a professional to do any of the work. You can find tons of options to choose from at your local home improvement store. And, as far as the installation goes, if you can handle a screwdriver, you can tackle the work yourself. In a matter of minutes, your kitchen and bathroom can have a whole new look!
